Gen Vayeishev questions

1) (A) Genesis 37:1 What is being communicated by beginning the parashah with the word 'and'? (following on from the saga of Jacob and Esau, and chapter 36's extra long genealogy of Esau)


2) (A) Why does this first sentence of introduction highlight that the two generations of Jacob and Joseph live in the land where their father Isaac lived as a foreigner? Does the Hebrew word magor (foreigner/sojourner) communicate anything different to the English words we're used to?


Can we gain encouragement and make application from what we see in this parashah to our own experience of being foreigners in this world? Suggested scriptures to look at 1 Peter 2, Ephesians 2, Hebrews 11


3) (B) Compare and contrast the deception of the 10 sons (37:31-35) with that of Tamar (38:14-26). Does the end ever justify the means? When and when not?


4) (C) In the Hebrew of verse 37:2 and 37:14 there's the idea of bringing back words... but in verse 2 it's a ra word, in 14 it's the idea of returning a word based on seeking the shalom (wholeness) of the brothers... are there 2 ways of bringing back words? Obviously, there was something in Joseph that Israel recognised but is there a better way.
